
Vörösmarty Memorial House
The poet of our second national anthem, The Szózat, Mihály Vörösmarty was born on 1st of December 1800 in Kápolnásnyék, next to Lake Velence. The memorial museum is in the family’s former residence, in the former farm officer’s house of the Count Nádasdy family, is the most significant Vörösmarty memorial in the country. The outstanding creator of Hungarian romanticism was brought up in this house but little Vörösmarty was not born within these walls, a year has passed since the family moved into this house, he spent his early childhood years here from 1801-1811 thus the memories of his childhood are already tied here.
Later, the last owner Géza Kresz firstly furnished a Vörösmarty memorial room, later in 1900. December 01st on the 100th anniversary of the birth of the poet they organized a celebration. Ethnographic researcher Mária Kresz offered the building to the MTA in 1984 with the request hat a memorial house be set up in honor of the poet. The first exhibition was opened in 1950, the current, interactive exhibition that meets the expectations of the modern age in all respects – after a significant renovation and park arrangement – oped in 2020 and awaits visitors from March 15th to October 31st (Except Mondays) daily. During the winter period, the group can visit the Memorial House based on written registration. Through 5 rooms visitors can learn about the life and work of Mihály Vörösmarty, the literary life of the reformation and a chamber exhibition commemorating the Kresz family. During a walk in the wonderful park, you can also come across the poems of Mihály Vörösmarty and the sculpture of Laura Csajághy.
