Károlyi Castle Fehérvárcsurgó
The castle, which was built between 1844-1851, is part of Hungary’s prettiest, highly protected monuments. it’s 50-hectare English park is also protected: arboretum and botanical garden. The builder, Count György Károlyi, intended it not only as a summer country residence: he saw it as a love nest, since it’s construction coincided with his marriage to Countess Karolina Zichy. His grandson, Count József Károlyi, rebuilt the castle n 1910 and moved here with his family.
In 1944 when the front arrived, the family left the castle. which was nationalized in 1945, then used as a resort, a refugee home for Greek children, and from 1955 as a county foster home, and finally vacated in 1979 due to it’s deteriorated condition. Since 2001, the estate manager of the castle has been the grandson of Count József Károlyi, who, after the renovation of the castle, created a hotel, restaurant and a European Cultural Meeting Centre in the listed building. The mission of the latter is twofold: in addition to being integrated into the currents of tourism, it becomes the home of culture and – through it’s two libraries – science. At the moment there is a restaurant, hotel and an event- visitor centre operates. The restaurant is open from 10-21.
